"Good character" evidence was included in 91.6 per cent of the 131 rape cases sentences in the District Court from July 2022 to June 2023. "It can be particularly galling to a victim-survivor to hear at the time of the sentence that the person who perpetrated sexual harm on them is otherwise a 'good guy', a 'great father' or a model employee of citizen," the report said. "It is even more upsetting when these statements are referred to uncritically by the sentencing judge and magistrate — even if in practice they may be given little weight."
Not only is it galling for abuse victims to have to sit in court listening to how the person just found guilty of assaulting them is actually a lovely person not normally like that at all, character references compound the advantage of the wealthy in the court system. The well connected can reach out to MPs, business and community leaders for references. How many of these referees have a long term personal relationship with the criminal that engenders a deep understanding of their character?) Criminals from less privileged circles meanwhile are less likely to have connections to these upstanding members of the community to act as character references, references which should not be taken into account when sentencing.
Still in Brisbane, where a group of most time on their hands retirees are objecting to an affordable housing development proposed for their suburb:
Peter Bingham is trying to prevent his local church from building affordable housing for low-income residents.
Mr Bingham is one of the Wakerley residents attempting to block the "inappropriate" two-storey development on a largely empty block of church land. The Ross Place home owner said the proposal for 44 affordable units would worsen the "traffic chaos" in the outer suburban Brisbane neighbourhood.Mr Bingham said he was concerned these homes would not be kept in good condition, and believed the church's primary motivation was profit.
This is affordable housing, rents capped below market rate, not public housing. But I doubt that knowing the difference would stop the bigots:
Signatories to the petition claimed the project would turn the neighbourhood into a "ghetto" that would attract criminals, drug addicts, and immigrants.
It would be nice to think that when Beryl and Jim require nursing home care and find themselves in understaffed facilities because the immigrants who make up a large number of nursing home staff can't find anywhere to live, they'll see the error of their views. I doubt it though; the wait to be bathed and fed will see them even more likely to unleash racist abuse at the overworked staff struggling to care for too many residents.
The United Workers Union is asking the NSW Government to bail out the embattled Star Casino to protect jobs:
Calls continue for a cash-strapped casino to be handed a government lifeline, with fears its demise will cost thousands of jobs and hit the wider economy."Over 300 food and beverage suppliers, including local farmers and producers, depend on Star's operations … industrial laundry services processing tonnes of linen for hotels and restaurants would see their business vanish overnight," United Workers Union casinos director Andrew Jones said.
The job market for hospitality workers is strong and one shudders to imagine the cost to the economy from the casino, the primary business of which is gambling. The government should not give the Star a single cent.
To the U.S. by way of Gaza, which will require a massive redevelopment effort. Good news. Trump will turn it into the Riverina of the Middle East. He just wants to ethnically cleanse the area of Palestinians first so he can flog the condos to the highest bidder:
I don’t think people should be going back to Gaza. I heard that Gaza has been very unlucky for them. They live like hell. They live like they’re living in hell. Gaza is not a place for people to be living, and the only reason they want to go back, and I believe this strongly, is because they have no alternative.
It would be my hope that we could do something really nice, really good, where they wouldn’t want to return,”Asked how many Palestinians he had in mind, he said, “all of them,” adding, “I would think that they would be thrilled."
Jordan and Egypt will take Palestinians, says the man who said Mexico would pay for the wall:
"Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area."
All while standing next to amd with the approval of the man responsible for blowing Gaza to shreds. Netanyahu knowing the far right Jewish supporters who keep him in power have lots of kids and need hosung.
Meanwhile, MAGA is confused again:
At a guess, people who do this aren't posting to social media about, let alone telling the likes of you about it?
Five year olds think it's hilarious to shout out "bottom". Most grow out of yelling rude words to get a reaction. Or you grow up to become Nancy Mace (R-SC) shouting in a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform:
“T*****, t*****, t*****. I don't really care"
